The Shelf for Books You Are Reading Now
A small active-reading shelf makes room for unfinished books without asking every bookcase to do the same job.

Choose a reachable spot
Keep the current stack near the seat, not on the floor beside it. Check that the shelf is secure and does not overload a narrow table.
Separate now from someday
Place only current reads and the next one or two choices here. Return finished books to their regular place so the shelf stays useful.
Leave room for a pause
An empty section is helpful. It gives a borrowed book or a newly chosen title a temporary home without building a second pile.
How many books belong on the active shelf?
Enough to offer a choice without hiding the titles; a handful is usually easier to keep current.
