How to Keep a Nightstand for Reading
A nightstand works better when the book, light and essentials have room to coexist.

Empty it once
Take everything off and return the items needed at bedtime. Notice how much surface remains before adding books back.
Limit the open stack
Keep the book in progress and perhaps one next choice. Move finished or abandoned titles back to a shelf so the stack stays legible.

Protect the easy reach
Leave space for water and the lamp switch. Put charging cables where they cannot snag a book or fall behind the furniture.

Where should the rest of the books go?
A nearby shelf or basket can hold future reading without crowding the nightstand.
