A Reading Lamp in the Right Place
Good reading light is about where the page sits, not just how bright the room looks.

Notice the shadows
Sit where you normally read and hold a book at a comfortable height. Move the existing lamp until your hand and head no longer shade the page.
Tame the glare
Aim light at the book rather than into your eyes or across a glossy page. A shade or adjustable arm can help, but first try changing the lamp's position.

Keep the switch close
The light should be easy to turn off from the chair. Route the cord out of the walking path and follow the fixture's bulb rating.

Do I need a new lamp?
Often not. Repositioning a lamp you own is the simplest first test.
